本周我们来学习和饮食有关的词汇  :

1. thermometer /θə'mɒmɪtə/

n. 温度计;体温计

e.g. Their research tells us that whenever the thermometer drops below 50 degrees Fahrenheit and the wind blows by at least three miles per hour, wind chill begins.

雅思听力14-2-4 :In 1592, the Italian scientist and inventor Galileo developed the world's first thermometer. His student Torricelli later invented the barometer, which allowed people to measure atmospheric pressure.

结合语境可猜出:barometer气压计;气压表

2. humidity /hjʊ'mɪdɪtɪ/

n. 空气湿度; 潮湿

e.g. The词汇 forests provide the humidity that is necessary for life.

e.g. Forecasters said low humidity and high winds could spark new fires.

adj. humid气候潮湿的,湿热的解析

如口语话题 :What is the weather like where you live?

e.g. The weather in my city is generally warm and humid, especially during the summer months. We experience high temperatures accompanied by a noticeable level of humidity, which makes the air feel a bit heavy.

其他近义补充:

muggy: 闷热潮湿的

sticky: (天气)湿热的,指正在下雨夹雪

e.g. It is 雅思sleeting. Be careful before it freezes, or the roads can be very slippery.

adj. sleety 雨夹雪的,下雨雪的

e.g. The weather in my hometown can be quite unpredictable, especially in the winter. It's not uncommon to experience snowy, sleety and slushy conditions.

补充词汇:

unpredictable weather 多变的天气

slushy 融雪覆盖的;满是雪泥的

注 :Muggy is always used when saying that the weathermakes you feel uncomfortable. Humid can be used in a moreneutral way– you can say This plant prefers humid conditions. You wouldn’t use muggy in this sentence.

3. drought /draʊt/

n. 长期干旱;旱灾

e.g. The area has been severely affected/hit by drought.

e.g. These new crops are also more resistant to drought, heat, and pests.

雅思听力6-4-4: Asiatic lions have been known to attack humans, especially in times ofdrought.

题目中drought 对应when water is short.

4. sleet /ˈsliːt/

n. 雨夹雪;雨夹雹;冻雨

e.g. The forecast warned of freezing rain turning into sleet, creating hazardous driving conditions on the roads.
